Rough Terrain Categories Covered: J1, J3
Certification: Delegates receive an AITT Accredited Rough Terrain Telescopic Truck Certificate.

The HSE guidance and industry standards recommend renewing refresher training every 3 to 5 years, which the forklift accrediting bodies adhere to.
The HSE states, employers need to ensure that anyone who operates a forklift receives adequate training under Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
When forklift refresher training is booked we would require a copy of the certificate to be sent back with the booking form to secure the training.
If the delegate does not have a certificate or is over 5 years they would need to complete Forklift Experienced training which covers additional areas to ensure the delegates are competent in using the truck.
Training Duration for Forklift Experience training:
2 days for 1 to 2 delegates max
3 days for 2 delegates max
The telehandler has differences to the rough terrain forklift, for example.
Telehandler
- Telehandler (telescopic handler) uses a long, extendable boom that reaches both upward and forward (like a small crane).
- Telehandlers can use many attachments like buckets, winches, and man-lift cages to act like multi-purpose machines.
Rough Terrain
- Rough terrain forklift uses a fixed vertical mast that only moves straight up and down
- Rough terrain forklifts are simpler and mainly used to transport palletized materials over dirt or grave
In the UK’s Accrediting Bodies Association (ABA) training standards, telehandlers and rough terrain masted trucks fall under the J Group, but they are distinct categories.
