What is a COSHH assessment?

A COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessment will review and idenfity substances and work processes that could harm people’s health. Evaluating how the exposure may occur and will recommend suitable control measures. It can cover chemicals, cleaning products, dust, fumes, gases, vapours, glues and other hazardous substances found or produced in the workplace. It is governed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

Does my business need a COSHH assessment?

Yes, if your business uses, stores or produces substances that are potentially harmful to health. This would apply to substances that are purchased for use and those created by workplace activities, such as wood dust from sanding, silica dust from cutting or fumes from welding. Businesses with five or more employees must record their assessment findings.

How often should a COSHH assessment be reviewed?

It is recommended to complete a regular review and it may also be required following changes to staff, substances, equipment or working processes, or after an accident, near miss or concern raised by an employee.
