Testing Details:

As part of our Health Surveillance Services we offer Qualitative Face Fit Testing in accordance with the HSE Guidelines. Our Face Fit Testing ensures the facepieces fit the wearer’s face effective and safely, therefore ensuring maximum protection.

Employer Considerations
If any of your employees wear respiratory protective equipment (RPE), the mask must be able to provide adequate protection for each individual wearer.

For respiratory protective equipment to protect the wearer, the facepieces shouldn’t have any leaks and a major cause of leaks. If the occurs then the facepiece is poor fit and can cause a health risk to your employees.

Type of Respirator: 1/2 face mask or disposable filtering face pieces

Duration: 1/2 day or 1 day testing for group testing and each test normally take around 15 – 20 minutes per person.

Location: Testing can be completed at your Company Site or for smaller numbers of employees at our open days at Milne Safety.

Requirements of Face Fit:

Health and Safety regulations in the UK require employers to carrying out face fit testing for all employees who need to wear a tight-fitting respirator. This requirement falls under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), the Control of Asbestos Regulations, and the Control of Lead at Work Regulations. The reason face fit testing is a requirement is to ensure that the selected respiratory protective equipment (RPE) provide adequate protection to the wearer with regard to breathing in hazardous substances.

When should face fit testing be conducted:

  • Before the employee uses the tight fitted face mask for the first time.
  • Whenever a different type, size, model, or make of fitted face mask is used.
  • Also periodically, to ensure continued fit and effectiveness and this is typically annually.
  • Lastly, when there are changes in the wearer’s facial characteristics or other factors that could affect the fit, such as significant weight loss, dental work, facial surgery, or changes in facial hair.
