How Often Is Forklift Refresher Training Required?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises that employers may choose to provide refresher training or retesting at set intervals, such as every three to five years. Once the certificate is over 5 years it is recommended an employee completes experienced forklift training to ensure any bad habits are ironed out. The important factor is ensuring operators remain competent and able to work safely.

Why Should a Forklift Operator Be trained and refreshed?

• Unsafe working practices develop – such as poor observation, excessive speed or incorrect load handling.
• An accident or near miss occurs – particularly where an operator’s skills or working practices may have contributed.
• The operator has not used a forklift for some time – practical skills can decline after a long period away.
• The operator uses forklifts infrequently – occasional operators may benefit from additional assessment.

An employee will also require certification for different trucks, as using a counterbalance forklift is completely different to operating a side loader truck.
