School summer holidays are here and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is reminding construction companies to make sure their sites are secure. Building sites can be tempting places for children to explore, and the HSE are advising construction companies to take additional precautions and steps to stop children and individuals gaining unauthorised access.

The HSE states construction companies have a duty to do everything possible to keep children out of their site and safe from danger, here are some specific steps,

• Where necessary, to reflect the nature of the site and the surrounding area, ensure suitable perimeter fencing or hoarding is erected.
• Check regularly and review site security to ensure fencing or hoarding is maintained and kept in good order.
• Make sure the site is adequately secure when finishing work for the day.
• Make sure the site is barred off or cover over excavations and pits.
• Isolate and immobilise vehicles and plant and if possible, lock them in a compound.
• Ensure all building materials are stored (such as pipes, manhole rings, and cement bags) so that they cannot topple or roll over.
• Remove access ladders from excavations and scaffolds.
• Lock away hazardous substances.

This few simple checks can make a big difference in keeping children safe and protecting your business.
