The Main Types of MEWPs
There are several types of MEWPs, each suited for different tasks and environments. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:
- Scissor Lift
Scissor lifts are perhaps the most widely recognised MEWPs. They feature a crisscrossing metal support design that extends vertically, providing a stable platform for workers and materials. Scissor lifts are ideal for indoor and outdoor tasks where straight vertical elevation is needed.
Best for: Electrical work, painting, maintenance, and installations at height.
- Boom Lifts (Cherry Pickers)
Boom lifts offer both vertical and horizontal reach, thanks to their extendable arm (or “boom”). They are perfect for accessing areas that are hard to reach directly beneath the workspace.
There are two main types of boom lifts:
Articulating Boom Lifts (with jointed arms for maneuvering around obstacles)
Telescopic Boom Lifts (with straight arms for extended reach)
Best for: Exterior building maintenance, tree trimming, and signage installation.
