Audiometric Testing
When carrying out Audiometric Testing there are specific parameters that must be met.
- The test must be carried out in a suitably attenuated area “our sound booth”.
- The ambient noise outside the booth must meet strict guidelines set out by the H.S.E. and the Booth Manufacturers.
- To achieve the requirements our vehicle has been attenuated to achieve the required level of noise. Merely as a guide we are able to achieve approximately 14 dB at 500Hz, which is quieter than a library.
- A type 1 integrating sound level meter is used to check that the ambient noise in the vehicle (outside the booth) is meeting the required level. Should the sound levels be exceeded the audiometric test will cease, until the temporary noise has been reduced.
- Prior to carrying out a hearing test the delegates will complete an audio questionnaire, this being satisfactory, their ears will be examined via the use of an otoscope to ensure that 10% of the tympanic membrane (eardrum) is visible.
If the above criteria has been met an Audiometric Test will take place. The test can be manual, controlled by the audiometrician, Beksey or Computer Controlled, any of the three methods can be used and are accepted by the HSE as suitab le.
Prior to staff being tested, please ensure they remove all ear jewellery and tie back long hair, they must also wear ear defenders prior to the test being carried out.
